Aloha kākou!
As UH Baseball approaches their season we present to you our Kālaipōhaku Capsule.
Originally designed specifically for our "professional" baseball team we pursued to do something special which birthed our Kālai design. From the genesis of our Kālai design, the inspiration and focus at the forefront was the space and surroundings of Kānewai and Kalaepōhaku. This place was essentially a quarry where rock, coral blocks, and other similar materials were cut for construction and were then transferred across spaces. Hence we emphasize this idea of a Kālaipōhaku which is a specialist versed with the skill of kākoʻi (maker of koʻi/axe/adze). Koʻi that was sourced and sharpened here were used to cut coral blocks and the material was used for various things from tools to buildings and structures, one of them being Kawaihaʻo Chruch. This in itself symbolizes the enduring legacy of foundational work.
Today, as we look at Les Murakami Stadium, the field has been the manifestation of special purpose for generations of old to legacies of new. Not only with updates to the stadium, whether it's the construction of batting cages or new turf, but with the people as well. At the Les, individuals in this space are sharpening their own koʻi and stone and becoming moa mahi (highly accomplished warriors) in all areas and aspects in life.
With that being said, leading off with this release is our Kālai Provision Snapback. We revisit the cap and give it a fresh look in our esteemed Murakami colorway. The crown is in kelly green and wrapped in our Kāʻoi pattern along the bottom edge. Our Kālai H is in the front and FITTED crest in the back embroidered in orange and white. If we dig deeper into the design of our Kālai H, there's a koʻi concealed within it. Directly below the H is what can be perceived as a typical underline, however in fact it is the shape that represents Lēʻahi (Diamond Head) in which can be viewed from a distance while being in the stands at Les. On the wearer's right panel is our Pae ʻĀina patch while on the left is an orange provision mark along with a white Kālai Hawaiʻi embroidered above. The cap is finished off with a white snap.
Next up to bat, we double up on our Aloha caps in New Era bodies both 5950 Fitted and 950 Snapback. The combo consists of a black crown, kelly green button and visor, and orange undervisor. Embroidery hits throughout the cap contain white, orange, and kelly green.
Lastly is our Kālai long-sleeve tee in black. Stamped proudly across the chest is our Kālai Hawaiʻi while the sleeves are decorated with our Kāʻoi pattern and Pae ʻĀina patch. Our standard crown is placed on the upper back for the final touch.
We send our aloha to Coach Hill and the rest of the staff and team as they continue to sharpen their koʻi and stones. UH's season opener will be on Friday, February 14, at 6:35pm HST against Marshall.
