King Kamehameha Day was established by Kamehameha's great grandson, King Kamehameha V in 1871, whereas the first observance of this state holiday was celebrated the following year. Governor William F. Quinn also announced Kamehameha as a state holiday when Hawai'i attained statehood in 1959.
