HOME GROWN

Aloha.Pull up a chair & have a seat. Pay close attention. Class is in session. Let’s briefly discuss the Hawaiian Renaissance (also known as the Hawaiian Cultural Renaissance) which was an reawakening or revival, if you will, of our contrasting Hawaiian cultural character and distinctiveness during the early ‘70s. Contemporary Hawaiian music artists such as Gabby “Pops” Pahinui (of Sons Of Hawaii fame) helped play an integral role in this cultural movement / resurgence. With this renaissance, there was a reasserted curiosity and interest in pidgin, Hawaiian language, Hula, Hawaiian studies & traditional Hawaiian arts. Before this enlightening cultural rejuvenation, there was the Merrie Monarch Festival (which they still run to this day) established by George Na’ope. The Merrie Monarch...

ELECTRIC (LADYLAND)

Aloha. (TUES 4.6.09)In any conversation that pops up about classic rock-n-roll and / or guitarists, Jimi Hendrix’s name should always pop up, in some shape or form. Hendrix was not just a superior guitarist, but an excellent singer and songwriter. He played a significant role in popularizing the wah-wah pedal in mainstream rock “which he often used to deliver an exaggerated pitch in his solos, particularly with high bends and use of legato based around the pentatonic scale.” (google that for the definition of this technical jargon). Hendrix was influenced by heavy hitters in music, such as Muddy Waters, BB King, Curtis Mayfield and Albert King, thus giving him his unique blend of jazz, R&B, blues and classic rock-n-roll. Besides...

KALAKOA

Aloha Kakou.Another month, another day. Keeping it stepping; the work day it never ends. Quick heads up, we’ve got a new release this Saturday. We’ve been running our tri-lock patterns here and there, making it pretty recognizable now. This release is no different (crew favorite), well there’s a slight twist to it. Printed on a black tee, both sides features the tri-lock pattern remixed into a circle with a colorful palette with teal, orange, yellow, and white. Just remember, keep those squares out of your winner’s circle! See you all at the next release.

GENERATIONS

Aloha. Our elders. They’re our infinite guiding light of wisdom & knowledge acquired from previous generations and passed on to the youth. Our elders have experienced and gone through the same adversities and achievements that us younger generations may have recently gone through, or perhaps not even come across yet. It’s habitual for our parents or grandparents to naturally pass these generations of knowledge on to the keiki and although we may not notice it, we absorb every drop of wisdom in our mental. To salute the one’s that came before us, we’ve put together a t-shirt + custom Fitted combo pack. This pocket tee is printed on all black and features a white Hawaiian quilt-esque pattern on the pocket. The back...

KEEP IT FUNKY

Aloha.By now many of you know where most of our inspiration for designing comes from. We’re perpetually surrounded by these guiding lights of motivation, influence, artistry, vision and originality – yet we’re so absorbed in it day-to-day that we unconsciously do not acknowledge it. With this release, the ingenuity reaches from within our zealousness of music. This release’s attributes are pulled from the funk music collective the Parliament Funk Band which was governed by the great George Clinton. For those uneducated in the genre of “funk music,” the Parliament (P-Funk) were also known as The Funkadelics which featured the same members, but recorded for different record labels. The Parliament-Funkadelics played a heavy role in the direction that funk music took,...
